My name is Bibiana. I was born in Colombia, lived much of my life in the United Kingdom, and I am now embracing a new chapter in Italy. Along this journey, the meeting of cultures and a deep connection to my roots have shaped both my path and the vision behind the brand.
Inspired by Colombia’s extraordinary artisanal heritage, BB Kattoi was created to build a bridge between cultures by sharing the beauty of Colombian handmade craftsmanship, woven through the hands of its makers — a reflection of tradition, authenticity, and the art of timeless work.
The Art of Weaving
At the heart of Wayuu culture is weaving. The art of creating Wayuu bags — known as Mochilas, or Kattoi in the Wayuunaiki language — is a sacred tradition. This is the inspiration behind our brand name. Each Wayuu mother teaches her daughter how to weave and crochet, keeping this ancestral knowledge alive. For the Wayuu people, weaving is far more than craft — it is wisdom, intelligence, and creativity woven into form. According to Wayuu mythology, a spider named Wale’kerü taught the women how to weave their stories into thread. Every Mochila is entirely handmade and unique to its weaver. The designs, colours, and patterns are personal expressions that tell stories of identity, territory, and life in the desert. These ancestral motifs are called Kanaso’u — the highest expression of how the Wayuu understand and interpret the world around them.
The Wayuu People
The Wayuu Indigenous Community of the La Guajira Peninsula, a visually striking desert region in northern Colombia. The Wayuu people live in small settlements called Rancherías, groups of five or six homes where traditions are preserved and passed down through generations, remaining beautifully untouched by modern culture. Their society is organised in matrilineal clans, meaning children carry their mother’s surname. Wayuu women are not only the heart of the family, but they are also the cultural leaders of their communities.
